The Sanibel Island Lighthouse was built in 1884. This photo was featured in the Lighthousing.net 2007 Calendar.The lighthouse was built when the nearby port of San Carlos developed. Sanibel Island is at the entrance to the bay, and was deemed a threat to ships.The lighthouse is still active, although it is now run by the City of Sanibel Island.One of the many islands that dot Helsinki's harbor. A small lighthouse can be seen to the left of the building.The Relandsgrund lightship was built in 1888 and served in the Gulf of Finland. In July 1914 it was ran aground and sunk by its drunken Russian crew. It was raised and recommisioned.The lightship was built in Turku, and is about 90 feet long.The lightship is docked near the intersection of some busy roads in Helsinki, and is located just below Uspenski Cathedral. It is hard to miss if you are in the area.This lighthouse is one of five in Vermont -- all of which are located on Lake Champlain. It was built in 1881, and is still active.Another view of the Isle La Motte lighthouse. The tower used to be painted bright red, but has since faded to this distinctive pink-salmon colour. The station is privately owned.This lighthouse was built in 1858, and is the northernmost lighthouse on Lake Champlain. In the 1930s, the lighthouse's light was transferred to the metal tower to the left. The original lighthouse was relit in 2003.The Fire Island Lighthouse was built in 1858. Its located on the south shore of Long Island.The lighthouse is 180 feet tall, and was visible from 24 miles away.There is a small museum in the the keeper's house, and visitors can walk to the top of the lighthouse. The views are great from the top.The lighthouse is located on the approaches to New York's harbour. It was often the first thing immigrants arriving at Ellis Island saw in the continental US.The Vigie lighthouse was built in 1914. The tower itself is only 30 feet high, but it is located on a hill that is nearly 300 feet above sea level.The Vigie lighthouse is still active, and is visible from most points in Castries. It stands at the entrance to the main harbour.The Vigie lighthouse is now automated, and the office next to it is used by the Castries harbourmaster.This is a distant view of the Vigie Lighthouse taken from the other side of Castries Harbour.The Cap Moule a Chique lighthouse is located on a tall hill behind the St. Lucia airport. It is over 700 feet above sea level.The views from the lighthouse are spectacular. It was built in 1912.The lighthouse itself is only 30 feet tall, however the hill its built on gives it a focal height of 745 feet. The lighthouse is completely dwarfed by the hill its on. This site is a 'must visit' because of the spectactular views.The lighthouse was in poor condition when I visited. Apparently now its been restored by a nearby resort.Another view of the Cap Moule a Chique Lighthouse.The lighthouse area is used by the Castries harbourmaster, who opened the tower for me. The tower was in decent condition, although all the glass on the lantern room was missing.The Vigie Lighthouse is easily accessible by road. A wider view of the Vigie lighthouse at dusk. The views from the lighthouse are excellent.The lighthouse is still active, although it now uses a modern acyrillic light instead of its original Fresnel lens.One final photo from my St. Lucia trip. The Christian Island Lighthouse was built in 1857 and was the first official lighthouse to be built on Georgian Bay.Christian Island is an indian reservation today, and is accessible by a car ferry. The Lion's Head lighthouse was built in 1912. It marks the entrance to a small harbour.The lighthouse is still active. The original was destroyed in 1969, and the light was transferred to a metal post. This replica was built by the local high school.The Big Tub lighthouse stands at the entrance to Tobermory harbour. It was built in 1885.The lighthouse is made of wood and has a height of about 40 feet.The Cape Crocker Lighthouse was built in 1902. In the early 20th century, this lighthouse would be shut down during the winter because of the lack of maritime traffic.Another view of the Cape Crocker lighthouse. The original Fresnel lens was removed from the tower in 2007 out of fears of vandalism.Point Clark is a small town south of Kincardine. Its located along the shore of Lake Huron.The Point Clark Lighthouse was built in 1859. It is 110 feet tall, making it one of the largest lighthouses in Ontario.Another view of the Point Clark Lighthouse. It was built by John Brown, who also constructed six other lighthouses on the Great Lakes.One final view of the Point Clark LighthouseThis is the oldest lighthouse on Lake Huron. It was built in 1847.The Sodus Point lighthouse was built in 1871. It marks the entrance to Sodus Bay, the largest natural harbour on Lake Ontario.This photo won second place in the Lighthouse Digest 2008 Photo Contest.This lighthouse was built in 1822. It is the second oldest lighthouse on the Great Lakes, after the Gibraltar Point lighthouse in Toronto.The Tarrytown Lighthouse is located upstream from the Tappen Zee Bridge. It was built in 1883.The Hudson River is a popular shipping route. The Esopus Meadows Lighthouse is pictured to the right, and gives you a good feel for the size of the freighter.This lighthouse is one of the most modern on the Great Lakes - it was built in 1934. It replaced a lighthouse that was built in 1889.This lighthouse was built in 1871, replacing one built in 1839. Recently, it has suffered damage from ice during the winter.The Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse was built in 1871. Its name comes from its location: the point is thirty miles east of the Niagara River.The original Olcott Lighthouse was built on a pier in the 1870s. It was destroyed in the 1960s. This replica was built in 2003.Plum Island is the site of the Plum Island Animal Disease Center. It is off limits to the public: the closest view of the 1869 Plum Island Lighthouse is from the Long Island to Connecticut ferry.The Orient Point lighthouse was built in 1899. The best views of it come from the Long Island to Connecticut ferry.The Montauk Point Lighthouse was built in 1797, and is one of the oldest light stations in the United States.The white tower to the right of the lighthouse is an observation and fire control bunker. During WWII, a large coastal artillery battery was stationed at nearby Camp Hero.The site for the lighthouse was chosen by George Washington, the first president of the United States.This is my favourite lighthouse.The erosion problem can be seen in the bottom of the photo. The cliff regularly collapse, and this is a problem for the lighthouse.This is one of the most well-known lighthouses in the world. It was built in 1791.Another view of the Portland Head Lighthouse. This is looking south. The Ram Island Ledge lighthouse can be seen on the far right side of the photo.The back of the Portland Head lighthouse. The bottom is made of rubblestone, while the top is brick.This small lighthouse is located on the Kennebc River. It was built in 1898.The Bath Iron Works, a major US Navy contractor, are located just upstream.The lighthouse is connected to the keeper's house via a raised walkway.There are three lighthouses located on the Kennebec River. All were built in the same year.One last photo of the Doubling Point LighthouseThe lighthouse was built in 1855. It was designed by Thomas Walter, who also designed the US Capitol Building Dome.The Cape Neddick lighthouse was built in 1879. It is located on a small rocky island just offshore. The keepers used to access the light via a cablecar connected to the mainland.Another view of the Cape Neddick lighthouse. After Portland Head, it is probably the most recognizable lighthouse in Maine.The cablecar can be seen to the left of the photo. Indian Island marks the entrance to Rockport Harbor. The lighthouse was built in 1875, and it is now a private residence.This lighthouse was built in 1896, and is located in Camden.Another view of the Curtis Island lighthouse. A lighthouse was first established on Curtis Island in 1835.Owl's Head marks the entrance to Rockland Harbor, a major port in central Maine. The lighthouse was built in 1826, making it one of the oldest in Maine. The western tower is in the foreground, while the eastern tower is visible to the left.Today only one of the two Cape Elizabeth lighthouses is active. The keeper's house is a private residence.Another view of the eastern Cape Elizabeth lighthouse. This is still active.The Spring Point Ledge lighthouse sits in the main entrance to Portland Harbor. It was built in 1897.The breakwater was built in 1951. The lighthouse is still active.A very foggy evening at Hendricks Head. The lighthouse was built in 1875.The Ram Island Ledge lighthouse is located a few miles off of Portland Head. The tower was built in 1905. The keeper's house was destroyed in a storm.The Lynde Point lighthouse is located near Saybrook and was built in 1838. The New London lighthouse was built in 1801. It is the oldest lighthouse in Connecticut.The lighthouse stands at the entrance to New London Harbor, just downstream from General Dynamics Electric Boat (the US Navy's main submarine builder)..A view of the New London lighthouse from the New London-Long Island ferry. It is also the tallest lighthouse in Connecticut.This was built in 1909, making it one of the newest lighthouses on Long Island Sound. The Little Gull Island lighthouse can be seen to the right.The Burlington Main Lighthouse is located below the Burlington Skyway Bridge. It is one of the oldest lighthouses in Ontario -- built in 1858. Due to its position, its very difficult to get a good picture of.Port Dalhousie has two lighthouses: the inner range (pictured) and the outer range.The Port Dalhousie Inner Range lighthouse was built in 1898. One more photo of the Inner Range lighthouse.This lighthouse is no longer operational. The lantern room is a replica of the original. The Port Maitland lighthouse marks the entrance to the Grand River.Another view of the Port Maitland lighthouse. The first lighthouse on the site was established in 1830, but its clear that this one was built well after that.The Mohawk Island lighthouse was built in 1848. Today its abandonned and in poor condition.Gibraltar Point is the oldest lighthouse on the Great Lakes. It was built in 1808.Another view of the Gibraltar Point lighthouse. I took this photo by using a short exposure time and positioning the sun so it shone through the lighthouse's lens.The lighthouse stands on the west pier at the entrance to Port Dover.The lighthouse was built in 1846, although it has been repaired numerous times and is now coated with sheet metal.Another view of the Port Dover lighthouse.Hamilton Harbour is a busy port. The Burlington Pierhead lighthouse is at the end of the pier. It was built in the 1920s.
